Otaru is one of the oldest port city in Hokkaido. Its modern history starts at the early Meiji Era (from 1868) when Otaru began to take major part in Hokkaido developement.
Otaru Canal (1923) is one of the remainders of those days. In Taisho Era (1912-1926) the canal area was Hokkaido's trade and economical center and was even called as "The Wall Street in the North".
Though the canal itself is not in practical use any more today, the canal area has been beautifuly refurbished and reborn as a popular tourist spot.
You will find the rows of old stone buildings once used as bank and trade company offices, many of which have been renewed into fancy restaurants, souvenirs shops, and glass art studios.
Enjoy shopping, dinig, or just strolling along the historical streets, then you get to Asarigawa Onsen after only 20 minutes drive.
